What Patriotism Means To Me

“And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” This beautiful quote was said by the forever gone president, John F. Kennedy. I personally think that this quote means that, the soldiers have helped us so much, that we need to start taking part in striving to make our nation a better place.

To begin with, when I think of patriotism, I think of love, like the love that I have for my family. I care for my family and I love them very much, like a lot of people love their country.

In addition, since I am Puerto-Rican and American at the same time, I feel patriotism for both of my countries.  Then again, I sometimes suffer because I see other countries in crisis. Nevertheless, when I see my nation (America) helping to give back to those in need, I feel overwhelming pride. For example, when the earthquake hit Haiti, we Americans helped by sending food and adopting children who lost their parents during the tragedy. This gives me hope and faith. To add on to that, many national organizations even help the soldiers that are risking their lives for us. These organizations are the USO and the American Red Cross. What these organizations do are the following: Support groups for military families and sending supplies to the soldiers. Other than that, Americans can even take part at their school. For example, here at my school, we did a “Soldiers Supplies Drive.”

In conclusion, many people care about their countries, and so do I. Every Fourth of July, I do a big celebration with my family, since the US is very special to me. Therefore, I do not think that the US or Puerto Rico are better than any other country. I respect other peoples’ traditions and cultures, the same way that they are supposed to respect ours. To add on to that, I personally think that all human beings need to love one another just the way they are, no matter what skin color you have or where you are from or what you believe. We all need to “co-exist.”

Just like Bob Marley’s song goes; “One Love, One Heart, let’s get together and feel all right!”
