Teachers as Parents

Is This What You Want?

Well, it has happened! Our governor has signed into law the Student Success Act. This law changes the way teachers will be paid and how your children will be taught. There are some positive aspects of this law, but like many things in government it was not thought out enough and leaves aspects up to the discretion of local officials. Here are the major points of the law:

  1. Teachers evaluation will be based on at least 50% student performance.
  2. Teachers in hard to staff areas like math and science will be paid more.
  3. New teachers will no longer have tenure but instead annual contracts.

“This landmark bill recognizes that teachers are the most important factor in schools when determining a child’s success,” said Students First Founder and CEO Michelle Rhee. Is this what you want from education? Do you want teachers to take on the role of a parent to your child? Inside or out of schools, you as the parent of your child are the most important part of their educational success. It is you that must be in active communication with teachers. It is you that must provide time and opportunity for homework. It is you that must push your child to reach their ability. Don’t give that power to a teacher, a school or our state government because no one cares about your child as much as you do.
