The School Board of Orange County held its regularly scheduled Board Meeting at 5:30 p.m. on June 28, 2011 at the Educational Leadership Center. These are the highlights of the meeting:
Parents and students should pay attention to the new Code of Student Conduct
Area Superintendents conducted an annual review of the Code of Student Conduct for the district and made revisions that clarify the procedures for the administration of student discipline for the 2011-2012 school year. The code approved by the school board tonight includes new language and revisions to language regarding items such as extracurricular activities, abuse of electronic and internet devices and communication devices, and zero tolerance for school-related violent crime. Jobs for Florida’s Graduates Stay in School Program to continue next school year
The Jobs for Florida’s Graduates Stay in School Program is designed to help ninth through
12th-grade students make a successful transition into post-secondary education or employment.
Three schools in the district participate. They are Jones High and Memorial and South Creek middle schools. Students learn how to become competent in mapping out career goals, getting a job, maintaining the job, communication skills, and leadership. With grants and corporate and foundation contributions, the district spends only $5,500 per teacher per school to participate in the program.
New amendment to policy regarding public participation at school board meetings
The policy explains how a community member shall address the board about issues not on the agenda by using the pre-agenda meeting. The change allows for a person or group to speak to an issue that is not on the agenda by submitting a request eight days in advance of the meeting, down from 11 days. Any person desiring to speak to the board regarding an item on the regular meeting agenda may sign up to speak prior to the beginning of the meeting. You can read more here.
Scott Funston appointed to Audit Advisory Committee
The Audit Advisory Committee works with district staff on a variety of issues related to fiscal management. The board approved the appointment of Scott Funston to the committee. Funston is a certified public accountant and works as Director of Financial Reporting for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. Please read Mr. Funston’s biography.
