Junior Achievement of Central Florida (JA) recently kicked off its annual Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser where local companies recruit teams, find sponsors and then come together at local bowling centers to bowl and raise money for JA. This year your company can support JA by participating in the 2012 Bowl-A-Thon. Teams consist of at least 10 bowlers – and there’s no limit on team size.

The event will take place throughout the first half of the year at bowling centers across Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Volusia andLakecounties. In 2011, nearly 10,000 bowlers inCentral Floridaraised enough money to help JA provide practical economic programs to 77,000 students in local schools.

“For the past 20 years, hundreds of local companies and thousands of volunteers have participated in JA’s Bowl-A-Thon,” said Craig Polejes, president of Junior Achievement of Central Florida. “It also serves as a fun team builder for companies. As one of our primary sources of funding along with corporate gifts, Bowl-A-Thon helps us raise the dollars necessary to deliver JA’s curriculum toCentral Floridaclassrooms. The programs we provide focus on financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship.”

The global economy remains in flux, and investors across the globe continue to witness a roller coaster ride with respect to their investments. Substantial gains one day are followed by a precipitous decline the next, and many investors are simply along for the ride and struggling to make sense of it all.

Though veteran investors are more familiar with such fluctuations, young investors might be more confused. Some might even delay getting started on their portfolios, which is one of the many mistakes young investors commonly make. As unpredictable as the market may be, investors are often much more predictable, often repeating the behaviors of those who came before them. The following are some of the more common mistakes young investors tend to make, each of which should be avoided no matter how difficult the market becomes.

Delaying the inevitable

Young people, particularly those who are just beginning their professional careers, often procrastinate when it comes to investing. This could be thanks to a host of factors, including inexperience, fear or simply wanting extra money in their pockets while they’re young. Each of these factors makes sense, but none of them should keep young people from investing. Most young people have seen the projections that show the staggering differences in money earned when a person begins investing at 25 as opposed to 35 (or even 30). Even something as simple as investing through a company’s 401(k) is a good place to start, and young investors should take advantage of the opportunity to do so as soon as they’re eligible.

When young investors put off investing, the results later on are not often pretty. That’s because of the tendency to overcompensate down the road. For instance, an investor who had the chance to invest in a particular asset but passed, only to see that asset grow significantly, might overcompensate the next time an opportunity presents itself. This is especially dangerous when it comes to investing, as fruitful investment ideas certainly don’t grow on trees. An investor who begins young and starts learning how to invest will feel more comfortable with his or her portfolio, and won’t feel the need to make up for lost years down the road.

Being an ill-informed investor

Young investors know about the need to invest, but many simply don’t ask enough questions about their investments. A young investor is in a great position for a number of reasons. Young investors are typically decades away from retirement and, as a result, can take on the most risk. The older an investor gets, the more risk averse he or she should become. Young investors commonly understand this principle, but that does not mean they should simply sit back and accept it when a risky investment does not pan out. While it’s good for young investors to take risks, if the risk doesn’t pay off, learn the reasons behind its failures. Doing so will lay a solid foundation for future investments.

Another thing young investors must learn is to avoid taking a risk for the purpose of taking a risk. While it’s true young investors can afford risks more than their parents or grandparents, that doesn’t mean they should simply invest in any and all risky opportunities with the hopes of one of those opportunities eventually paying off in a big way. Learn what makes some risks better than others, and don’t necessarily get married to a certain investment strategy. The markets are constantly evolving, and investors need to evolve along with them to be successful over the long haul.

Only investing “extra” money

Another common mistake young people make is the way they perceive investing. Many young people approach investing as something they will do when they get some “extra” money. Unfortunately, the day young people get this extra money rarely, if ever, arrives. Additional expenses, including vacations with friends or nights out on the town tend to take precedence, and young people find themselves approaching or even in their 30s without an investment portfolio to speak of. Treat investments as a monthly expense like rent or a car payment. Then, if there is any extra money at the end of the month, add that to the amount already invested. Tomorrow never comes in the world of investing, and young investors in particular need to realize that and get started as soon as possible.

As prevalent as prescription medications are, all-natural remedies for common illnesses and conditions are still a viable alternative to prescription medications for many people. But are these all-natural options safe? [...]

As prevalent as prescription medications are, all-natural remedies for common illnesses and conditions are still a viable alternative to prescription medications for many people. But are these all-natural options safe?

In 2011, Apple founder Steve Jobs lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. Reports indicate that Jobs, a devout Buddhist, delayed surgery and other traditional treatments for almost a year while he participated in holistic treatments for the cancer. Some of these included juice fasts, bowel cleansings, acupuncture, herbal supplements, and even a vegan diet. Eventually, Jobs had surgery, but some experts feel he waited too long.

Although conventional care is often an effective means to treating illnesses and other conditions, there are many doctors who agree that implementing natural remedies at times can be safe and effective.

Furthermore, not all natural remedies are without merit, and some traditional medicines are actually derived from natural, plant-based ingredients themselves.

According to surgeon and author, Dr. Walter C. Thompson, “Herbal medicine is safe because it’s natural. After researching the literature, one can truly say that, at the very least, herbal medicine is safer than conventional drugs.”

Those thinking about incorporating natural remedies into their health regimen can consider the following options.
* Nervousness and anxiety: Try lettuce, chamomile, valerian, and rose petals.
* Pain relief: Use omega-3 fatty acids, green tea, ginger root, and tumeric.
* Itchiness: Witch hazel, jewelweed and aloe vera are effective.
* Feminine issues: Parsley, basil and goldenseal can alleviate symptoms associated with menstruation.
* Antibiotics: Oregano and garlic are purported to have antibiotic qualities and can fend off harmful bacteria.
* Infections: Honey has long been used to heal and as an antibacterial and antifungal remedy.

Many natural foods are effective in preventing and fighting cancer as well.

Although natural remedies can be effective, it’s important for pregnant women to avoid any herbs and plant supplements until discussing the risks/benefits with their doctors. Also, some natural remedies can interact with prescription drugs or increase their potency, so it’s important to talk to a doctor about any plans.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 25 million people have died from HIV/AIDS since the onset of the epidemic roughly 30 years ago. By 2008, more than 33 million people across the globe were living with HIV/AIDS, including more than two million children under age 15.

Though great strides have been made with regards to diagnosing and treating HIV/AIDS, many feel there is still a significant way to go before this deadly disease can be defeated once and for all. One of best assets in the fight against HIV/AIDS is understanding the disease, which can lead to more effective prevention and a greater appreciation of what those battling the disease are facing every day.

What is HIV?
HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It is a virus that infects cells of the immune system, destroying or impairing their function. Once a person is infected, the virus works to progressively deteriorate the body’s immune system, making it difficult for the body to fight infection and disease. The infections that result are known as “opportunistic infections,” as they take advantage of an infected person’s weakened immune system.

What is AIDS?
AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, is used to describe the most advanced stages of HIV infection. When a person has AIDS, he or she is fighting any of more than 20 opportunistic infections or HIV-related cancers.

How is HIV transmitted?
The WHO notes that HIV can be transmitted in a number of ways. At the onset of the epidemic, HIV was thought to be transmitted only through sexual intercourse. While HIV can be transmitted through sexual intercourse, including oral sex, there are a number of additional ways the disease can be transmitted, including:
* transfusion of contaminated blood
* sharing of contaminated needles, syringes or other sharp instruments
* between a mother and her infant during pregnancy
* childbirth
* breastfeeding

Who is most at risk of getting HIV?
Though no one is immune to HIV, there are some people who are at greater risk of HIV than others. These people include:
* injection drug users who share needles
* infants born to mothers with HIV who did not receive HIV therapy during the pregnancy
* sexually active people who engage in unprotected sex, especially with partners who have additional high-risk behaviors, are HIV-positive or have AIDS
* people who received blood transfusions or clotting products between 1977 and 1985, before screening for the HIV virus became standard practice

How long does it take before AIDS develops?
Once infected with HIV, those infected often want to know how quickly AIDS will develop. That varies depending on the individual. If untreated, those infected with HIV will develop symptoms of HIV-related illness within 5 to 10 years. But the time between an HIV infection and an AIDS diagnosis can be more than a decade.

Are there symptoms of HIV?
There are symptoms of HIV, but many people do not develop any symptoms upon being infected. However, within several days or weeks of exposure to HIV, some people do experience a flu-like illness characterized by fever, headache, fatigue and enlarged lymph glands in the neck.

Upon infection, symptoms might not appear or be very slow to develop, a period that can last as long as a decade. Though no symptoms appear, the virus will continue to actively multiply and infect and kill cells of the immune system. The virus can gradually kill CD4+ or T4 cells, which are the immune system’s primary infection fighters.

Once the immune system has been weakened, then the following symptoms might develop:
* lack of energy
* weight loss
* frequent fevers and sweats
* persistent or frequent yeast infections
* persistent skin rashes or flaky skin
* short-term memory loss
* mouth, genital or anal sores resulting from herpes infections

If AIDS has developed, the affected might begin to experience cough and shortness of breath, seizures and lack of coordination, difficulty swallowing, forgetfulness, fever, vision loss, weight loss, and extreme fatigue.

More information about HIV/AIDS is available at www.who.int.

The store will be located at 4200 Conroy Road at the main mall entrance on the lower level next to Brio Tuscan Grille. The new store will open Friday, Nov. 4, just over a year after opening the first Pinkberry in Orlando — and the state — at The Marketplace at Dr. Phillips. Statewide safety belt use reached 88.1 percent this year following the 2011 Click It or Ticket safety belt campaign.

Following the Click It or Ticket cam¬paign, an observational survey of Florida vehicles was conducted in June 2011. The survey’s results show an all-time high safety belt usage rate. Only four of the 12 survey counties went down. Increases in the other counties surveyed led Florida to an overall use rate of 88.1 percent compared to 87.4 percent in 2010. Pickup truck drivers and their pas¬sengers continue to be among the lowest users. The full 2011 safety belt usage final report is available on the FDOT website at http://www.dot.state.fl.us/safety/.

WHITE OUT TEEN CRASHES: Traffic crashes are the #1 killer of teens in Florida and in the United States. To keep more teens safe in the driver and passenger seats, the Department encouraged all Floridians to participate in a statewide White Out on Oct. 18. Teens joined the Department by wearing a white shirt to school to help symbolize the white out of teen crashes. The Department observed National Teen Driver Safety Week Oct. 16 – 22, and used the opportunity to educate teens and their par¬ents about staying safe behind the wheel.

Teens (ages 15 – 19) have the highest crash rate of any age group in Florida. Below are statistics from the Florida Traffic Crash Statistics Report 2010 that provide some ad¬ditional insight.

•	737,645 teens are licensed to drive in the Sunshine State.
•	26,848 crashes involved teens last year.
o	144 teens died.
o	18,543 teens were injured.
•	Florida’s teen drivers are twice as likely to crash as their parents and three times as likely to crash as their grandparents.

The Department created www.TakeTheWheel.net, an interactive website by teens for teens, as well as Drive with CARE (Courtesy, Attention, Responsibility, Experi¬ence) to educate teens and their parents about Florida’s graduated licensing law and the importance of parental involvement in teaching teens to drive.

FLORIDA HIGHWAY PATROL ANNOUNCED NEW DEPUTY DIRECTOR: The Florida Highway Patrol achieved a historic mile¬stone as the first female lieutenant colonel assumed her new position and duties. FHP Director, Col. David Brierton, announced that Kelly Hildreth is the new deputy director of field operations. Hildreth was selected from a pool of more than 50 ap¬plicants from a nationwide search. Her previous assign-ment was at FHP headquarters in Tallahassee, where she was the coordinator of the office of professional compliance and emergency operations.

She began her career in Troop L in Palm Beach County as a trooper after graduating from the 89th Recruit Class. Since then, she has moved up through the ranks, spending most of her career in Tallahassee. Hildreth is a graduate of the Uni¬versity of Central Florida and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice.

REGISTER YOUR EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION: If you are in an emergency situation, would law enforce¬ment officers be able to contact your loved ones? The Department worked with lawmakers and citizens to create the Emergency Contact Information system to help make sure law enforcement CAN find your loved ones if you are unable to make that call yourself. The sys¬tem allows licensed drivers and identification card holders to register up to two contacts to notify in the event of an emergency, such as a vehicle crash. The information can then be accessed only by law enforcement officers to find designated contacts in the case of an emergency.

More than 5 million Floridians have registered their contacts, and DHSMV wants to encourage all of Florida’s licensed drivers and ID cardholders to register their contacts.

Gov. Rick Scott signed a proclamation to name Oct. 2 – 8, 2011, Register Your Emergency Contact Information Week in Florida. The week marked the five-year anniversary since ECI’s inception, and the Department used the opportunity to Increase the number of registrants.

Registration is simple and can be done at any computer by logging onto www.flhsmv.gov/eci. Floridians can register in any driver license office in the state, too, which includes those operated by county tax collectors.

The Department encourages you to make sure your own information is registered and to tell your friends and family members about ECI.

“Like so many parents, it can be a challenge to keep my active family organized, especially on the go,” says Olympic gold medal figure skater and mom of two Kristi Yamaguchi. “I am thrilled to share with other moms and dads my favorite tips for unstoppable families.”

1. When a busy day has you skating from one activity to the next, it’s important to be prepared. Bring along a backpack with everything you might need for your on-the-go day, including handheld snacks, like bananas and Smucker’s® Uncrustables® PB&J sandwiches, water, sunscreen and easy activities for down time.

2. Unstoppable families are always on the move. Post a large calendar in the kitchen or family room to capture and keep track of your family’s weekly activities. Assign a different color marker to each member of the family. This will help keep everyone on time and in line.

3. Let the games go green! Encourage creativity by finding ways to repurpose everyday items into fun activities. A drinking straw and some ribbon becomes a magic wand. Two painted paper towel rolls can become a pair of backyard binoculars. Reuse magazines to make colorful collages and other fun art projects.

4. Sometimes fast-paced weekdays leave little time for family fun. Set aside time each weekend to enjoy the outdoors and each other’s company. Plan hiking trips and bike riding adventures that will appeal to everyone. Put together a “scavenger list” with fun things to look for along the way like a yellow flower, a white cat, a BIG bug and other outdoor items.

5. Have a little fun while on the run. Store books, games, markers and paper in the car to keep kids entertained on the road or in-between events. Also, make sure to have some kid-friendly tunes to keep the kids singing from your driveway to the soccer field.

6. Ask around at your local community center or health club about family fitness classes. Try an aerobics or swimming class as a family; it will be a great way to stay active and spend time together.

7. Like the title of my book Dream Big Little Pig, I always teach my kids they can accomplish anything with practice and perseverance. Encourage your kids to try their best at every activity they pursue and explore their interests no matter how sky-high. You might be raising an award-winning musician or the future President of the United States.

8. Think outside the toy box when it comes to family activities. An old blanket quickly transforms into a magic carpet when spread across the living room floor. Couch cushions and bed sheets always make the best forts. A simple flash light becomes a projector for shadow puppets in a dark playroom. Use soccer balls, hula hoops and other everyday items to create a fun obstacle course in the backyard.

9. My family spends a lot of time on the ice and it has shown us the importance of teamwork. Encourage your kids to join a local soccer or basketball team. They’ll have fun while learning team building skills.

10. Don’t let a rainy day dampen your outdoor plans. Pitch a small tent in the living room and have a “camp in” complete with a construction paper campfire and sleeping bags. Weather the storms outside with tall tales shared over campfire treats.

From big-ticket purchases to basic household items, people from all economic backgrounds are prioritizing their shopping lists to spend wisely on items worth the investment. It is not surprising that when buying items for you or your family, it can be difficult to decide where to adjust your household budget. Personal finance expert, author and TV personality Farnoosh Torabi provides these tips for how save on everyday items, and shows families where extra spending can lead to long-term savings.

Saving on the Everyday

Buy in bulk and store. Basic household items such as paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap, hand soap and laundry detergent can be purchased in large quantities and shelved for later use in order to save money over time. Look to large retailer stores that offer buy-in-bulk options. Also consider purchasing frozen food to store and use as needed.

Get creative; call for reinforcements.

E-mail friends and family to set up a kids’ clothing swap. Trading gently-used clothing with other families is a great way to get the items you need, without spending a great deal of money.

Save on babysitting expenses by swapping out weekend nights of kid watching with a friend or family member.

Set up a carpool to save time and fuel.

Clip those coupons. Though it may seem obvious to point out that you can save big by clipping coupons, many people overlook this money-saving practice. Look for coupons online and in your local newspaper. There are several sites online that can keep you updated about savings at stores in your specific location as well.

Spending for long-term savings

Trade up now, save more later. Certain household items may cost more up front, but will save time, energy, money and other resources down the line if you invest in quality products. Torabi suggests the following items deserve larger budgets up-front:

Running shoes – Fitness experts suggest purchasing quality, high-performance shoes that are designed to protect against injuries and their impending medical costs. Purchasing good workout shoes during your lifetime could potentially save you from costly injuries – such as a $15,000 knee surgery.

Quality mattress – The average person spends a third of his or her life in bed. So, investing in a quality mattress now, and one that can adjust to your changing body over time, will provide a low cost-per-use, since you sleep on your mattress every day. “I’ve partnered with Sleep Number because there is no need for couples to compromise – the mattress can be adjusted on each side to a persons’ firmness preference,” Torabi said. “It’s like getting two beds in one and it lasts twice as long as other mattresses,” she added.

Electric toothbrush – Proper brushing and flossing practices are important for maintaining oral health and can save you money down the line. Avoid costly dental expenses by purchasing a quality electric toothbrush, brushing and flossing two or more times daily, and keeping those dental cleaning appointments.

Green appliances – When upgrading kitchen or other household appliances, spending more up front can mean big savings later. “The average household spends $1,400 a year on energy bills. By purchasing energy-efficient products, you can save 30 percent, or more than $400 a year,” says Torabi. Over time, those savings could pay for the cost of each appliance. And purchasing a high-quality product means your appliance will continue to run properly with minimal maintenance years from now.
